Overview
This workshop is focused on those ESOL learners who enter the classroom with limited formal education in their native language(s).
Details
Many adult learners arrive in the ESOL classroom with limited formal education in their native language(s). This can complicate their ability to learn written as well as spoken English. This workshop offers ESOL instructors the opportunity to: (1) examine the complexity of first language illiteracy and how it an inform second language acquisition; and (2) learn classroom strategies and pedagogical practices that have proven effective with low-literacy ESOL learners. Note: This workshop is part of the Instructional Foundations series and qualifies for PDPs, if taken with others workshops in this series that total at least 10 contact hours. Other workshops in this series include: “Managing Your Multi-level ESOL Class: What you need to know and do” (November 2008; 3 hours), Take the GRR out of grammar: Grammar made easy (December 2008, 5.5 hours), “Write Down: The Write(ing) Workshop for Supporting all Learners (especially ESOL) in the ABE, Pre-GED and GED Classroom (May 2009; 4 hours). You must contact Michele before the start of the first workshop for which you are registered for information on PDPs.
