- In this workshop, we will look why ESOL classes tend to by multi-level and what we can do within these classes.

- In this active and participatory workshop, we will examine why our ESOL classes tend to be multi-level groupings and how to work with this. We will explore the three main points to consider when facing such classes. We will also define and learn to use an instructional strategy to manage our classes. This event qualifies for PDPs if taken with other courses in this series. You must contact Michele Sedor (msedor@hcc.mass.edu or 413-552-2442) BEFORE you take the first workshop you plan to take of the series for more information and to be eligible. You must choose at least ten contact hours of workshops in order to get PDPs. Workshops that can be counted include: 1. Managing Your Multi-level ESOL Class: What you need to know and do (3 hours; November 2008) 2. Take the GRRR out of Grammar: Grammar Made Easy (5 hours; December 2008) 3. Introduction to ESOL Literacy (3 hours; April 2009) 4. Write Down: The Write(ing) Workshop for Supporting all Learners (especially ESOL) in the ABE, pre-GED and GED Classroom (4.5 hours)

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:
- List two reasons why ESOL classes tend to be multi-level.
- Name and explain three main points to consider to manage a multi-level ESOL class.
- Identify and develop ways to “level” activities in at least two types of lessons to manage different levels of students in a given class.

- Nicole Beaudoin Graves is the ESOL Program Coordinator and Head Teacher at the Center for New Americans in Amherst, Greenfield and Northampton, MA. She brings a vast and long experience having taught learners of various ages, across many disciplines and in different roles, including 13 years with persons with LD. Currently, in addition to her role as a resource person and supervisor of teachers, she teaches a beginning ESOL class and an ESOL literacy class. In 2006, she completed a 2-week Bridges to Practice training (LD). She is a frequent presenter at SABES workshops and at NETWORK. She can be reached at cnaamh@rcn.com
