- This workshop will focus on identifying possible learning disability characteristics in an ESOL learner, reviewing case studies of learners and developing strategies for assisting a suspected LD learner.

- Based on the manual, “Do My ESOL Students Have Learning Disabilities?” this workshop is designed to give an interactive opportunity for ESOL instructors to understand how learning disabilities relate to second language learners. Participants will gain knowledge of hindrances to learning, screening and assessment issues, and planning of teaching students suspected of having LD. Specific LD screening tools will be demonstrated to and practiced by participants. Case studies will be introduced and analyzed in order to apply all information. Each participant will receive a copy of the manual, as well as handouts of screening tools.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify learning problems that interfere with their ESOL students' learning that are NOT learning disabilities.
- Use some simple tools that will screen for a learning disability.
- Name specific strategies for working with learning disabled students in his/her ESOL classroom.

- Presenters Bio
- Tricia Farely-Bouvier is the Education Director at the Literacy Network of South Berkshire. Diane Shewcraft has been teaching ESOL at The Adult Learning Center in Pittsfield for the past 16 years. Previous to this, she served as the K-12 ESOL Coordinator for the Pittsfield Public Schools. During her tenure there, she developed a Policy and Procedures Manual for second language learners for this school system. Over her 16 years in the field of Adult ESOL, Dianne has developed a community based curriculum for Adult ESOL Learners, developed a tutor training manual, co-authored the manual “Do My ESOL Students Have Learning Disabilities” and has facilitated many workshops on both teaching and tutoring ESOL.
