Overview
This workshop was and presented at Network 2007 presenters. This “version” is expanded and improved! It will look at the “why, what, and how” of teaching vocabulary in the ESOL classroom.
Details
In this experiential workshop, participants will explore the “why, what, and how” of teaching vocabulary in the ESOL classroom. Through a number of activities, participants will increase their awareness of the criteria involved in “knowing” a word, learn a variety of practice activities, and create a lesson plan for students based on the students’ interests and abilities.

Learning objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of vocabulary for the ESOL student;
  • Describe at least three criteria for "knowing" a word;
  • Explain and use at least three practice activities for vocabulary building; and
  • Create a lesson plan for specific students targeting at least one aspect of vocabulary.

Laura Porter and Diane Worth
Presenters Bio
Diane teaches ESOL at the Center for New Americans in Greenfield. She holds an M.A.T. (ESOL) from the School for International Training and has been teaching ESOL for 16 years, including 9 years abroad. Laura is an ESOL Instructor at the Center for New Americans and Greenfield Community College. She has developed and presented professional development workshops for public school teachers and college faculty on working with non-native English speakers. She is passionate about supporting the needs of immigrants and refugees in this country.
