ADA Coordinator Orientation - Statewide Training (CMA)
- Overview
- This session will highlight the major tenets of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and clarify the rights and responsibilities of adult education programs as well as individuals with disabilities. Participants will identify policies and procedures that can be used to provide equal access, program modifications, and reasonable accommodations in all aspects of their programs and services. Actual case studies will be provided to assist participants in applying ADA concepts. The application of Universal Design as an additional method of improving access to adult education programs will also be discussed.

- An ADA Coordinator must attend at least one workshop on any disability topic each year and hsare the information learned with colleagues. This orientation is strongly recommended as the starting point for professional development for new ADA Coordinators. Experienced ADA Coordinators who need a review of ADA basic information are invited to attend.

As a result of this workshop participants will be able to:
· identify the general requirements of the American with Disabilities ACT (ADA) and processes to provide accommodations and program modifications for adults with disabilities
· articulate the rights and responsibilities of adult education programs and adult students under the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and IDEA
· identify aspects of Universal Design that can be incorporated in adult education to increase access to programs and services for persons with and without disabilities
· review the ADA checklist for ABE programs and the accompanying standards

- Patricia Anderson, Ph.D. – Patricia has 30 years experience working with adolescents and adults with disabilities, Especially those with learning disabilities. She is a trainer for the Adult Training and Development Network in Connecticut. Pat was coordinator of the Connecticut Postsecondary Disability Technical Assistance Center at the University of Connecticut for fifteen years. She has a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology/Special Education and a Sixth Year Degree in School Psychology from the University of Connecticut.
