Overview
This course provides an excellent opportunity to learn about adult development with the convenience of online delivery, the support of face-to-face instruction via web conferencing, and interaction with your peers. In this 45-PDP, licensure-compatible course, participants will examine concepts and theories of adult development, explore the reciprocal relationships between development and learning, and apply new knowledge and skills to their classroom practice. The format for the course is engaging, convenient and offers you the best of all learning worlds.
Details
Beginning with a face-to-face session on Saturday, February 9, 2008 (snow make-up on February 16), this 45-PDP-hour course will go through to May 10, 2008. During that time, participants will work online, engaging in a variety of activities that include discussion boards, small group work, web-based research, and web-conferencing via Wimba. The web conferences are “live online” and will occur on a bi-weekly basis, days and times to be agreed upon at the first class meeting. It goes without saying that taking an online course requires work—as with all courses, there are readings, assignments, and group activities. While travel logistics are eliminated, you will find that the course work requirements are every bit as demanding as “regular” course; at times, they may seem more intense because of the need to participate online more frequently. The rewards of being able to learn on your own time and to engage with others in a more relaxed manner, however, are many and the format will soon become comfortable. Because the course is almost completely online, participants will need to: - Have computer and Internet access - Have comfort with basic word processing and email - Practice with the demo course on Backboard Vista before the course starts (http://www.umassonline.net/CourseDemo.cfm) - Log on to the Adult Development course once registered and given log-in information—course will be ready for viewing from February 4th on. (We will also review and use the online tools at the 1st session). Those who complete this course will have much of the knowledge and materials required for licensure.

Learning objectives
As a result of attending the course, participants will be able to: - Identify several concepts and theories of adult development and explore the reciprocal relationship between development and learning; - Understand key topics that include theories/models of development, the effects of shared cultural and historical influences on development, and psycho-social, cognitive, and moral/ethical changes which occur as adults move through the lifespan; - Learn about one theorist in-depth; - Relate theories and materials of adult development to their own lives and the lives of adult learners; -Incorporate course concepts by applying what they are learning to their classroom teaching; - Design lesson plans with teaching strategies that take into consideration various aspects of individual development.

Barbara A. Macaulay, Ed.D.
Presenters Bio
Barbara Macaulay currently serves as the Chief Academic Officer for UMassOnline. Prior to joining UMass in 1999, however, she served as the Dean of Continuing Education at Quinsigamond Community College, overseeing both the ABE Programs and the Central Mass Regional SABES Center. Barbara assisted in developing the first pilot courses for SABES for both adult development and adult learning theories. She has over 25 years experience in the field of adult and continuing education, including adult literacy, and has taught adult education and adult learning courses at Worcester State College, Clark University, and Teachers College/Columbia University, and UMass Boston, as well as conducting professional development courses for SABES and other organizations. Her doctorate from Teachers College is in adult and continuing education.
