Description: This 10-hour face-to-face course is required for all teaching staff new to ABE. During this course, practitioners will explore many facets of teaching in adult education programs funded by DESE such as: who are our adult learners and what their goals are; fostering a critically reflective practice; what does effective teaching look like; and what theorists have influenced adult education. We will also review the essential elements of lesson planning: learning objectives, the MA ABE Curriculum Frameworks, authentic assessments, and a variety of classroom activities and teaching strategies. This is a two part course and you must register for both parts.
The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) requires all teaching After you register for this course, you will receive a reading assignment and pre-self-assessment via email to be completed prior to the first day of the course. During the course, you will develop a sample lesson plan which incorporates the ideas and components that are explored throughout the course. You will have the opportunity to share your classroom experience with colleagues, and discuss critical aspects of teaching in the ABE/ESOL classroom. At the end of the course, you will complete an evaluation and post-self-assessment.
