Overview
This workshop will focus on strategies for improving the skills of pre-GED and GED level students through the use of longer works of fiction and nonfiction. We will address the ways that using novels and book-length memoirs can effectively improve students’ reading comprehension in ways that shorter works cannot while addressing the ways that we can support readers who have little experience with reading and understanding a book-length work. We will also address some of the reading components that go into comprehension (word recognition, vocabulary, reading fluency), and discuss specific types of discussion and writing activities that will further students’ reading efforts.
