LD Foundations: Understanding LD & the ESOL Learner (SE)

Overview
Do you have a student in your ESOL class who isn’t progressing as quickly as the others? In this workshop you’ll explore some factors that influence learning. A relatively quick and easy assessment tool will be studied to help you clarify what might be hindering your student’s progress.

This is the third in a series of sessions on LD that Ellen will facilitate for SABES SE this year. 10 PDPs will be available for those who attend the LD & the ESOL learner session and 2 other sessions on LD Awareness & LD teaching/classroom strategies scheduled in October and November, 2008. Completion of a project is also required for the PDPs. The LD Foundations series is appropriate for both ABE and ESOL staff.

Participants will:

  • Understand the pitfalls in “testing” ESOL students
  • Cite 3 different factors that interfere with language acquisition and how they can be determined in a particular student.
  • Administer a screening tool for learning differences in ESOL students

Presenters Bio
Ellen has been teaching ESOL for the Quincy Adult and Continuing Education program since 1992. Since 1993 she’s been working with adult basic literacy learners at LVM-Quincy. She was also a YALD co-trainer with Janna Oddleifson for adult education programs and Dept. of Transitional Assistance workers. She participated in intensive training with Robin Schwarz in assessment of and strategies for teaching ESOL LD students. Specializing in teaching adult ESOL and basic literacy learners with learning disabilities, she is a SABES SE consultant for learning disabilities and a BEST Plus Assessment trainer.
