- This multi-session 15-hour Orientation offers a broad introduction to the world of adult basic education. You should attend this training if you have worked in a DOE-funded adult basic education (ABE) program for less than one year, or if you have never received a comprehensive introduction to adult basic education. Participants must register for and attend all three sessions of the Orientation (October18, November 15, & December 6, 2008) *Morning Coffee and Light Refreshments Will Be Provided* *Please bring your lunch-lunch break is only 30 minutes*

- * Note to Directors: the Mass. Dept. of Ed. REQUIRES all staff ‘new’ to Mass. Adult Basic Education programs to complete 15 hours of orientation training. Please enroll all staff members who have not completed this course, including those who aren’t ‘new’ to the field. Participants must attend all sessions and complete all homework and projects to complete the course successfully and receive a completion certificate. 15 PDP’s are also available for successful completion of this training. Upon completion of this fifteen-hour orientation participants will have an introduction to and awareness of….
Session 1
1) The broad range of adult learners’ experiences, background and culture with an understanding of some of their motivations to pursue education and the barriers to success
2) The different learner centered approaches and their relationship to the classroom
3) The various adult-learning theories, and how they inform teaching practice
4) Explore the multiple definitions of literacy to broaden practitioners’ perspectives of approaches to teaching and learning
5) Explore the issues of language acquisition and how they connect to literacy and education.
Session 2
1) Learning disabilities including the definition, different types and resources for additional support and information
2) The Massachusetts ABE Curriculum Frameworks
3) The curriculum development process that aligns learners’ goals, the ABE curriculum frameworks and assessments
4) Thematic units and lesson planning
5) The accountability system for MA ABE field
6) Massachusetts assessment based educational gains and their relationship to the National Reporting System
7) Goal setting in the classroom and countable outcomes
8) A variety of assessment methods for ongoing assessment
Session 3
1) The history and development (state and national) of Adult Basic Education
2) The Massachusetts Department of Education funded ABE system
3) The statewide SABES system including its purpose and available resources for staff development
4) The licensure process and the ABE teacher standards
5) The roles and responsibilities of the educational counselor/learning support specialist (including mandated reporting)
6) Practitioner background, beliefs, experiences and values and their influence on professional practice
7) Universal design and its benefits in an ABE classroom

We are joined by Dr. Mev Miller (former SABES SE staff member) founder of WE LEARN - Presenters Bio
- Dr Miller's Bio: Dr. Mev Miller is a former SABES Southeast Associate Coordinator. She is also the Founder and Executive Director of WE LEARN, Women Expanding Literacy Education Action Resource Network. Her interests in connecting spirituality and education reach back into the early 1980s when she read Paulo Freire (Pedagogy of the Oppressed) while studying liberation theology at Yale Divinity School. Mev infuses (com)-passion in her quest as an educator for social justice and whole humanity. She recently built a labyrinth in her back yard as a way to continually re-center her theory/practice, mind/heart, and action/reflection. She has over 10 years experience in Adult Basic Education.
