Overview
ABE administrators wear many hats in their work. One hat they must wear is that of organizational leader. Others will look to them to set the stage for change and to guide required changes as well as innovative changes that improve services and the working environment, yet may not be mandated. In this six-hour training, ABE administrators consider five main topics: 1. the difference between management and leadership 2. personal leadership style 3. visions and plans for ABE programs 4. the process of managing change, and 5. leadership challenges and opportunities

In this six-hour training, ABE administrators consider five main topics: 1. the difference between management and leadership 2. personal leadership style 3. visions and plans for ABE programs 4. the process of managing change, and 5. leadership challenges and opportunities While exploring some fundamental aspects of leadership, the SABES Leadership Basics for ABE Administrators’ training also sets the foundation for two additional 4.5-hour trainings: • Community Leadership for ABE Administrators (December 2, 2008) • Educational Leadership for ABE Administrators (January 13, 2009) 10-15 PDP’s may be available to anyone who has full attendance at this Basics training and also completes one or both of the community and educational Leadership trainings along with a project. Learning objectives

As a result of this training participants will be able to:

  • Articulate differences between managing and leading an ABE program
  • Identify personal leadership characteristics and vision
  • Describe the difference between adaptive change and transformational change
  • List at least two strategies for leading change in your program
  • Identify strategies to implement leadership opportunities and maintain leadership under challenge

Gloria Watanabe, Former Executive Director of the Randolph Community Partnership
Presenters Bio
Gloria Watanabe is the former Executive Director of the Randolph Community Partnership. She has worked as the Community Planner for RCP since 1999, developing community connections between town officials, community advocates and the business community; she also served a term as Secretary and then President of the local Chamber of Commerce. She has been involved in education since 1986 as a high school, college, and adult education teacher.
Prerequisites
None PDP's will be available if you you also complete one at least one additional Leadership training this year. The Educational Leadership Training is the Pre-requisite for those trainings. They are: • Community Leadership for ABE Administrators (December 2, 2008) • Educational Leadership for ABE Administrators (January 13, 2009)
