As a result of successfully completing this course, the participant will be able to:

Identify strategies for creating a “classroom community” where learners feel comfortable and are willing to try new things with language.
- Improve students’ speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension by selecting and creating materials that are relevant to students’ lives.
- Use materials effectively to reach students in multi-level classrooms
- Help students to increase vocabulary, both in class and outside the classroom.
- Help students to improve their fluency and pronunciation.
- Motivate students to take responsibility for their own language learning (so that it continues after they leave the classroom) by modeling simple strategies and free or low-cost activities
- Create lesson plans that accommodate a variety of learning styles and include various teaching strategies.

- Sherry Lehane
- Presenters Bio
- Sherry’s career in adult education spans 13 years. During this time, she has taught ESOL in a variety of contexts including family literacy, workplace, and Business English. She also enjoys teaching computer skills to ESOL learners. In 2007, Sherry worked with the RI Department of Adult Education in drafting the listening and speaking standards for adult education. She has presented workshops for teachers in adult education on a variety of topics such as: multiple intelligences, project based learning, teaching listening, student centered curriculum, and strategies for supporting adult learners.
