Description: Have you wondered why one or more of your learners are not progressing in your class? Have you noticed a change in one of your learners? Do you have a learner that suddenly loses interest in things that s/he was once excited about? These could be signs of depression.
Jennifer Gearhart, Director of outpatient mental health at South Bay Mental Health Center and her colleagues will discuss depression and the adult learner. This interactive panel discussion will help you identify the effects of depression and explain ways that can help you support your learners.

Description: This 4.5-hour training is designed to identify the knowledge, develop the skills, and demonstrate the strategies that ABE directors need to be effective community leaders. The workshop can benefit all administrators, though less experienced directors will likely find the materials most useful.
Participants must attend the SABES Leadership Basics Course first. In this training, the main foci are: the ABE director’s or administrator’s role as a leader within the community where their program operates and how to maximize potential for the program by forming productive relationships with diverse community members.

Description: This multi-session 15-hour Orientation offers a broad introduction to the world of adult basic education. You should attend this training if you have worked in a DOE-funded adult basic education (ABE) program for less than one year, or if you have never received a comprehensive introduction to adult basic education. Participants must register for and attend all three sessions of the Orientation (October18, November 15, & December 6, 2008)
