- Overview
- Adult Education in the 21st Century is a six-hour workshop, facilitated by Federico Salas-Isnardi, Adult Literacy Specialist from Texas A&M. Federico has done extensive work in applying 21st Century Skills to the ABE system and he has over 22 years in the field of ABE and ESOL. This workshop will introduce the concepts of 21st Century Skills and the implications for Adult Basic Education. Participants will learn what competencies (soft skills) that adult learners need to be successful in their next steps, whether post secondary education, job training or employment. The question “what is the role of adult education in teaching 21st century skills?” will be explored and discussed.

SABES is pleased to announce the first in a series of professional development offerings on Integrating 21st Century Skills in the ABE/ESOL Program. The goal of the professional development series, Integrating 21st Century Skills in the ABE/ESOL Program, is to explore the interpersonal, problem solving, critical thinking, and technical skills our learners need to advance with confidence in the world of work and life-long learning. This series will connect you with a menu of authentic strategies, tools, curriculum, lessons, research, resources, experts, forums, and events that interweave the 21st Century Skills that adult learners need to achieve their next steps goals. PDPs are available when you attend at least 10 hours of professional development from this series.

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the context of the 21st Century Skills educational philosophy and how it supports efforts to develop “next steps” for adult learners;
- Identify skills and “new literacies” of the 21st century for classroom application;
- Evaluate the importance of integrating 21st Century Skills into the ABE/ESOL program and classroom;
- Develop ideas for lesson plans integrating 21st Century Skills into the ABE/ESOL curriculum;
- Access additional resources and materials to integrate 21st Century Skills into the ABE/ESOL program and classroom.

- Federico Salas-Isnardi
- Presenters Bio
- Federico Salas-Isnardi is the former Assistant State Director of Adult Education and Family Literacy in Texas and was responsible for professional development for the state. Federico has worked for 22 years in the field as an ESOL and GED instructor, professional developer, and program administrator. He has 17 years experience as a trainer in cross-cultural communication and diversity and has developed and facilitated training on systemic professional development models focusing on the role of the individual teacher in the system. He was the 2007/2008 chair of Adult Education for TESOL and services on the technical group redesigning the citizenship test for the USCIS and on the board of the Association of Adult Literacy Professional Developers (AALPD). He recently coauthored Future—English for Results, a six-level multimedia adult ESOL series that uses 21st Century Skills. Federico is currently pursuing a PhD in Adult Education at Texas A&M University where he works as Adult Literacy Specialist for the Texas Center for the Advancement of Literacy and Learning.
