Instructional Foundations: Improving ESOL Reading and Writing Skills (NE)

Description: In this workshop participants will learn strategies to help learners develop their reading and writing ability in English. Participants will explore reasons for teaching reading and writing to all ability levels of students, and how to encourage adults to become more proficient readers and writers. A variety of pre- and post-reading activities designed to increase reading fluency and comprehension will be demonstrated. Participants will also learn how to incorporate the writing process to help learners not only improve their writing ability, but also as a means of increasing their understanding and ability in English.

Learning Objectives:

“Improving Reading and Writing Skills” Objectives

Participants will:

·        identify factors impacting adult literacy acquisition and recognize the characteristics of fluent readers.

·        increase their awareness of  various reading approaches

·        list a variety of strategies for adult literacy acquisition such as, schema, contextual clues, and graphic organizers.

·        compile techniques to encourage learners to generate ideas and vocabulary for writing.

·        analyze and apply concepts of higher-level thinking.
