Instructional Foundations: Improving ESOL Reading and Writing Skills (NE)

- Overview
- In this workshop participants will learn strategies to help learners develop their reading and writing ability in English. Participants will explore reasons for teaching reading and writing to all ability levels of students, and how to encourage adults to become more proficient readers and writers. A variety of pre- and post-reading activities designed to increase reading fluency and comprehension will be demonstrated. Participants will also learn how to incorporate the writing process to help learners not only improve their writing ability, but also as a means of increasing their understanding and ability in English.

- This training is designed for ESOL Teachers, Counselors, and Program Directors. The Instructional Foundations Series qualifies for PDPs. To be eligible for PDPs, you must attend at least three (3) of the workshops in the series, and complete an application to practice activity. The number of workshops attended will determine the number of PDPs you are awarded. “Improving Reading and Writing Skills” Objectives
Participants will:
· identify factors impacting adult literacy acquisition and recognize the characteristics of fluent readers.
· increase their awareness of various reading approaches
· list a variety of strategies for adult literacy acquisition such as, schema, contextual clues, and graphic organizers.
· compile techniques to encourage learners to generate ideas and vocabulary for writing.
· analyze and apply concepts of higher-level thinking.

- Heidi Perez is currently the Staff Developer at Lawrence Adult Learning Center and was previously an ESOL teacher at the Lawrence Adult Learning Center. Heidi has developed and facilitated numerous workshops for NE SABES and is hailed as a dynamic and engaging trainer!
