Overview
Understand and teach fractions, decimals, and percents using collaborative, hands-on methods that appeal to multiple intelligences. Deepen your appreciation for the ways we represent and problem solve with the ‘rational’ numbers known as fractions. Erase fears and anxieties about numbers. Enjoy the company of colleagues and new perspectives on familiar topics. Come, learn, and grow with NE SABES skilled presenters and facilitators. Increase your own problem solving competence as you explore math content areas, and build your confidence as you learn new multi-sensory teaching strategies that are both creative and fun! Befuddled by students who just don’t seem to ‘get’ fractions, decimals, and percents? Come to this workshop to explore models that help students visualize these tricky numbers and to consider the issues that confuse learners trying to problem solve with them. This is session 2 of a two session workshop series. Submit registration for this two session workshop on the December 3--Session One posting on this SABES web calendar. An optional "Teacher to Teacher" follow-up sharing session is open to all practitioners January 21, 2009. Please refer to SABES calendar to register for this follow-up session. PDPs will be awarded upon successful completion of at least 10 hours of participation in this Math Series.

Learning objectives

As a result of this Session Two workshop, participants will:

  • describe at least two instructional methods that make fractions, decimals, and percents accessible to many levels of students;
  • use at least two models to picture operations involving fractions or fraction answers;
  • explain and apply to problem solving four interpretations of fractions;
  • articulate learning issues related to fractions, decimals, and percents;
  • apply the Curriculum Frameworks to review activities and lessons.

Presenters Bio
Barbara Goodridge and Christina Cronin are both math teachers at Lowell Adult Education Program and have been facilitating the highly successful Teacher to Teacher Math sessions for the past three years. Their approach will build your confidence as you learn new multi-sensory teaching strategies that are both creative and fun!
Prerequisites
This is Session 2 of a two-part workshop. You must attend Session 1 and Session 2. Registration submissions should be entered on the Session One, December 3 posting on this SABES Web Calendar.
