Overview

In recent years, adult education programs have seen increasing numbers of English Language Learners (ELLs) in ABE/ASE (Adult Secondary Education) classrooms that present different learning challenges for teachers and these ELLs. This series of three workshops will provide research-based methods to increase learner gains.

Details

This interactive series of three workshops will provide effective techniques and strategies to improve the English language proficiency as well as content knowledge of your English Language Learners, increase your awareness of second language acquisition theory and will focus on building background knowledge, increasing vocabulary skills, and exploring alternative ways of getting your message across in diverse classroom settings. ESOL teachers will also benefit from this series for teaching content-based lessons. PDPs (12) will be awarded for participation and attendance in all three workhops Session 1--Thursday, October 16,2008 from 4:30-8:30pm, Session 3-- Thursday, December 4,2008 from 4:30-8:30pm

Learning objectives

Participants will be able to:

·        Identify the key factors that affect second language acquisition

·        Identify the components of SIOP

·        Define and develop content objectives and language objectives for a content-area lesson

·        Recognize the importance of connecting past experiences with the content

·        Describe strategies used to develop an effective vocabulary

·        Develop a lesson that incorporates effective strategies for teaching and learning vocabulary

·       Model alternative ways to get their message across

·       List teaching strategies that make lessons more accessible and meaningful for ESOL learners

·       Describe several techniques to engage learners

·       Analyze pacing and content considerations in a class with ESOL learners

·       Discuss the characteristics of an effective SIOP lesson

Presenters Bio

Andrea is an experienced ESOL teacher and staff developer. She was one of the first educators to receive teacher licensure for Adult Basic Education. Andrea has presented workshops for SABES, MCAE, MATSOL, and TESOL. Much of her work has focused on curriculum development and implementation. Abbi is currently an Intermediate ABE and Basic ESOL teacher at Operation Bootstrap in Lynn, MA. She was a graduate student under Jeanne Chall at the Harvard Reading Lab and was a reading specialist in private practice for several years in Marblehead, MA, training and mentoring teachers and parents in reading theory and practice.
