Overview
Are you looking for practical strategies to help your ESOL learners improve their pronunciation in English? In this interactive workshop, you will explore different methods of teaching pronunciation including integrating segmentals (individual sounds) and suprasegmentals (stress, rhythm, intonation, etc.) into language learning activities. In addition, the workshop will address the underlying factors that affect pronunciation improvement. Finally, participants will have the opportunity to discuss and explore the relationship of pronunciation with listening, speaking, and writing.

Please Note – Professional Development Points PDPs) are available: The Instructional Foundations Series qualifies for Professional Development Points (PDPs). To be eligible for PDPs, you must attend at least three (3) Instructional Foundations workshops and complete an application to practice activity. The number of additional workshops attended will determine the number of PDPs you are awarded. Sessions in the ESOL Instructional Foundations Series are: "ESOL Unit and Lesson Planning”, "ESOL Listening and Speaking", "Pronunciation Strategies", "Improving ESOL Learners’ Reading and Writing Skills", and "Integrating Instructional Resources into the Classroom” Attend one, two, or all four of these sessions!

  • Identify and define several components of pronunciation
  • Match physiological components of pronunciation with their labels

  • Apply several activities of classroom practice

Laurie Hartwick
Presenters Bio
Laurie Hartwick is a teacher for the Lawrence Public Schools High School Learning Center. She has taught both adults and adolescents in the Center’s various programs and has worked with ESOL adults at many levels. Her special interests include ESOL pronunciation, and developing strategies and activities to help adult learners improve their pronunciation in English. She has presented workshops on a range of ESOL topics for Northeast SABES, MCAE Network Conferences, and TESOL.
Prerequisites
Although not required, it is highly recommended that participants attend an Improving ESOL Speaking and Listening workshop, since this pronunciation workshop builds on the skills developed in the "speaking and listening" workshop.
