Overview
ESOL learners come to our classes with the goal of improving both their listening skills and speaking ability in English. In this workshop participants will explore both listening and speaking as processes in meaning-making. Learn a variety of strategies which will help learners achieve competence and confidence in listening to, and speaking with others. This workshop is appropriate for ESOL Teachers, Counselors, and ESOL Program Directors

Please Note – Professional Development Points PDPs) are available: The Instructional Foundations Series qualifies for Professional Development Points (PDPs). To be eligible for PDPs, you must attend at least three (3) Instructional Foundations workshops and complete an application to practice activity. The number of additional workshops attended will determine the number of PDPs you are awarded. Sessions in the ESOL Instructional Foundations Series are: "ESOL Listening and Speaking","Introduction to Pronunciation Strategies", "Improving ESOL Learners’ Reading and Writing Skills", and "Integrating Instructional Resources into the Classroom” Attend one, two, or all four of these sessions!

Learning objectives

As a result of attending this workshop participants will:

·        recognize the speaking/listening connection in ESOL instruction.

·        collect a variety of assessment tools to use in their classrooms

·        participate in a variety of activities that are useful for speaking/ listening instruction.

·        create and write a speaking/listening lesson using the newspaper as a resource.

·        present their lesson plans to the group and participate in a peer review

Presenters Bio
Heidi Perez is currently the Staff Developer at Lawrence Adult Learning Center and was previously an ESOL teacher at the Lawrence Adult Learning Center. Heidi has developed and facilitated numerous workshops for NE SABES and is hailed as a dynamic and engaging trainer!
