- December's Topic: “Adult Development – how knowledge of Developmental Psychology can help ABE Counselors”: Here are some questions as a catalyst for discussion: • What is “normal” development? • How may the motivation and willingness to take ownership of their learning be different for younger students than for older students? • What inspires much older learners to return to school? • Are there normal/healthy developmental dynamics at work when the 17-year-old student rebels against a program’s rules, a teacher’s authority, or a counselor’s perceived intentions? • How may we adjust our responses in order to address challenging behavior while also supporting and not pathologizing normal developmental stages? • How may we harness all students’ drive toward “developmental achievements” from first contact through follow-up? • The discussion may also touch on different views of what is "normal" and what gets in the way of normal development (perspectives on ADHD, effects of trauma and substance abuse, for example). Future Meeting times and dates: Upcoming Counselor Sharing Seminars: March 2, Mon., 1-3:30, Northern Essex Community College May 13, Weds., 1-3:30, Northern Essex Community College
