Overview
Do your students avoid writing because “they have nothing to say?” Are you having difficulty encouraging your students to begin the writing process? Are you looking for some new strategies and techniques to get the ball rolling without your students? This interactive, fun and engaging workshop will give you some techniques and strategies to help get your students to begin writing. Assist students to creative voice through pre-writing activities, rubrics, and peer editing. This workshop will also help support you, the teacher, in getting your students to participate in the “Do the Write Thing” student writing project. You will also learn strategies to create pre-writing activities to use in your classroom.

        As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will be able to:

 

·devise pre-writing activities for learners at various levels

·identify strategies to help students distinguish between copying, paraphrasing, plagiarizing and avoid other pitfalls in the writing process

·use various rubrics to assist students to edit their work and to reach their writing goals

Presenters Bio
Dr. Mev Miller (formerly of SABES SE) is the founder and director of WE LEARN (Women Expanding Literacy Education Action Resource Network). As a trainer, educator, and facilitator in a diverse array of ABE projects, she has many years of experience with participatory practices and creating leadership opportunities. Mev has edited and produced ABE student writing publications for many years and is herself a published writer.
