Description:
The Department of Education requires all staff new to Adult Basic Education to participate in 15 hours of orientation training. This orientation offers a broad introduction to the world of adult education, its practices and resources. You should attend this training if you have worked in an adult education program for less than one year, or if you have never received a comprehensive introduction to adult education.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of this training participants will:
- gain an understanding of the many facets and issues of literacy, adult learners, and adult education
- understand how teaching and learning with adults is different from working with children
- explore many effective approaches to working with adult learners
- understand what learning disabilities are and how they impact your students and your practice
- explore goal-setting, lesson-planning and assessment
- access teaching and learning resources, including books, videos, and technology
- learn about SABES and other ABE teacher support services
- create a portfolio of your attitudes, insights, and knowledge regarding adult education
- network, share and learn with colleague
- develop a staff development plan to enhance your teaching and your students' learning
