- Overview
- This workshop will focus on understanding domestic violence and how it affects individuals and the community. We will discuss definitions of abuse, the different forms of abuse, cycles of violence in relationships and families, the prevalence and effects of domestic violence, and how to talk to someone who may be experiencing an abusive relationship. Resources for help, support, shelter, counseling, legal aid, and other emergency services will be provided. Issues of safety planning for programs and for individuals will also be addressed.

- After completing this workshop, participants will be able to: 1) Identify red flags and warning signs of abusive relationships 2) Discuss the cycle of violence and how domestic violence affects entire communities 3) Access local community services which aid survivors of domestic violence 4) Describe the do's and don'ts of talking to someone who may be experiencing an abusive relationship 5) Identify strategies for increasing program safety for individuals and for programs.

- The presenter has a Master's of Public Health degree from Boston University, where she focused on domestic violence as a human rights issue. She works for Casa Myrna Vasquez, a Boston-based, multicultural domestic violence agency, as a Prevention and Education Specialist.
