Overview
Most students participating in community based ABE and ESOL programs are working people, many of whom are unaware of the laws that govern the workplace and provide them rights at work. This interactive workshop is designed for Community-based ABE and ESOL teachers who are interested in addressing the very relevant topics of workers rights in their classes, but are unfamiliar with the laws. The facilitators are from the statewide University of Massachusetts Labor Extension Program, which has developed a ten module participatory course on workers rights, in English and Spanish. Participants will receive a copy of the full curriculum. This is an IPQ1 workshop. Targeted participants will be ABE/ESOL teachers, job developers, student counselors and administrators of ABE programs.
Details
During the first week of the 2-session training, participants will be introduced to the full curriculum, then engage in activities from the first module, which provides an overview of workers basic legal rights. Then we'll explore ways to adapt and use this resource with ESOL and ABE students. Participants will be expected to try out an activity between week one and two. The second week will begin with feedback on the assignment and then will focus on issues that are identified as most important to participants or are most frequently faced by workers.
