Overview

ABE Foundations is designed for new and less experienced ABE teachers and focuses on the methods used in the low-to-mid level (GLE 0-6) ABE classroom. Challenges and needs of the ABE student are also addressed. Participants in the workshop will be oriented to the ABE classroom and through hands-on materials and activities learn about techniques and strategies for teaching writing, reading and math to the low-to-mid level ABE student. The workshop will also expose participants to goal setting, lesson planning and assessment processes within the ABE classroom.

Learning objectives

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to: 1) Demonstrate an understanding of lesson plan design including the importance of goal setting in lesson planning; 2) Organize a low level ABE class using relevant materials, resources and assessments; 3) Recognize common reading difficulties in students at ABE Level 1 and explain research-based reading techniques to address those difficulties; 4. Describe teaching techniques for the different steps in the writing process; 5. Identify signs of math anxiety and describe teaching techniques and resources for learrners who fear math and/or have a math learning disability; 6) Explain the indicators and definitions of Learning Disabilities including ADHD.

Presenters Bio

Ellen Koretz teaches at the Charleston Community Center. Esther Leonelli teaches at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. Emily Rubin has been teaching writing in higher education and ABE for years.
