Overview

During this two-part workshop, teachers will learn about how to teach GED-based math through creative project using an integrated skills model. Teachers will be encouraged to experiment with this model in their classrooms after the first workshop, and then return to the second workshop willing and able to share what happened.

Details

Project-based learning is active learning in which the teacher facilitates and students discover, plan, research, and use mathematical reasoning, principles, and problem-solving to build skills necessary for the GED and beyond. This form of instruction provides tools to adults working in teams to solve real word problems and to enable them to make decisions using data, algebra, geometry and number sense skills. Good projects provide rich scenarios for leaning mathematics in science and social studies contexts that go beyond traditional word problems and include content which make science, social studies, and technology accessible to GED learners. This workshop will provide participants with several hands-on activities in cooperative problem-solving which incorporate several of these skill sets.

Presenters Bio

Esther D. Leonelli is a consultant and an adjunct math instructor at Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston. She previously taught Pre-GED/GED math at several Boston-are ABE programs.
