Overview

At this meeting, we will examine multi-cultural issues in ABE programs. How can the ABE counselor facilitate cultural awareness among learners, teachers and other staff members? What are our own cultural biases? How do we solve misunderstandings that may occur due to a lack of understanding of cultural differences? How do we foster and maintain an atmosphere of tolerance, respect and understanding in our programs? Come and share your thoughts on these and other issues. What works for you? What doesn’t work? Share your strategies and learn what has worked for other counselors.

Details

The Counselors’ Sharing Group (CSG) is open to counselors and interested staff from ABE programs in the Boston SABES Region. ALRI/Boston SABES is planning three CSG meetings for the whole year, all to be held at JFYNetworks. Each meeting will feature a discussion on a specific topic of interest to counselors and allow us to share our experience, resources and concerns. A portion of each meeting will also provide the opportunity for discussions of other issues facing ABE counselors. The setting will be one of sharing and support. At the 3rd sharing group meeting on 05/02/2008, we will also spare some time to hear suggestions from our ABE Counselors as what we would do together for the next fiscal year. Please contact Pat Pestana, the facilitator of the sharing group meetings, or John Zhang, the Associate Coordinator at ALRI/Boston SABES, for any information or resources that you would like to bring to the meeting.

Pat is a Case Manager at JFYNetWorks in Boston. She has over 20 years of experience in human service and education programs. She has been a counselor in an ABE program for over 5 years and has also worked as a career advisor for dislocated workers.
