There will be 4 presenters at this workshop to deliver topics on ABE transition supports and services. They will also join in relevant discussions following their presentations.

--- Listening to Joe Hennessey of the Berkshire Community College, participants will gain a better understanding of goals ABE to College Transitions in Massachusetts, learn of the common features of the current 10 ACLS-funded programs and become aware of the variety of program designs that assist ABE students to achieve their goals through higher education. Joe will “make the case” for college transitions and outline system of supports available to ABE students as they move into higher education. Participants are encouraged to reach-out to their regional Transitions program and contact information for those programs will be provided. --- Brian Murphy Clinton from Northeastern University serves as the Assistant Dean of Enrollment Management for the School of Professional and Continuing Studies. Brian has been a financial aid administrator for the past seven years and will be presenting information about the availability of financial aid for adult learners in higher education. He will cover the basic financial aid process and share his experiences and insights with helping adult learners finance a higher education. --- Debra Garrett from The Work Place will give participants an overview of the workshop: “Online Job Applications: Getting Ready,” which was designed as a collaboration between the Boston Private Industry Council and Boston’s One Stop Career Centers. The workshop is available on the PIC’s website and provides an introduction to the world of online job applications for job seekers, students, training customers and other individuals who have to apply for jobs with businesses that use online job applications as their portal to employment. Participants will be provided a detailed review of the sections of the workshop and learn how they can use it to support the individuals with which they work. There is a special emphasis on strategies for dealing with the personality assessment components of these applications. --- Stephen Hanley’s presentation will focus on non-rates based classes to develop employability skills, which are offered at the WAITT House and some other ABE programs in the Boston region. He will share experience and resources on how their employability class has engaged adult learners in career exploration and career planning as they pursue a high school diploma.

Learning objectives
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

- Learn more about various transitional programs and the system of support in Massachusetts which help them assist adult learners transitioning to higher education.

- Help ABE students identify financial aid resources that are available at various types of educational institutions.

- Use the Boston PIC-Career Centers' "On-line Job Application" to help adult learners search for jobs.

- Become more knowledgeable of the employability skills class as a new model for ABE programs to get adult learners prepared for employment.
