Description:
This three-hour workshop for practitioners in the field of adult ESOL education will present information on learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD, ADHD). Other reasons for classroom difficulties will be considered. Current research related to this unique population will be presented. Participants will consider how their current practices can be used and expanded to meet the needs of LD/ESOL students. Simple screening procedures will be presented. A goal of this workshop will be for participants to develop a list of strategies that will be helpful to them in meeting the needs of their ESOL students with learning disabilities.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:
• Become acquainted with research relevant to working with the LD/ESOL learner
• Begin to synthesize current experience and knowledge with theory and practice related to learning disabilities and second language acquisition
• Describe some simple screening procedures
• Develop strategies for meeting the needs of this population
