Overview
This three-hour workshop for practitioners in the field of adult ESOL education will present information on learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD, ADHD). Other reasons for classroom difficulties will be considered. Current research related to this unique population will be presented. Participants will consider how their current practices can be used and expanded to meet the needs of LD/ESOL students. Simple screening procedures will be presented. A goal of this workshop will be for participants to develop a list of strategies that will be helpful to them in meeting the needs of their ESOL students with learning disabilities.

Learning objectives
As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Become acquainted with research relevant to working with the LD/ESOL learner

• Begin to synthesize current experience and knowledge with theory and practice related to learning disabilities and second language acquisition

• Describe some simple screening procedures

• Develop strategies for meeting the needs of this population
Presenters
Grace Rooney, M.Ed., M.A.
Presenters Bio
Grace Rooney has taught students with learning disabilities in public school, adult education and postsecondary education. Since entering the field of ESOL teaching fourteen years ago, she has worked to combine theory and practice in these two areas. At Curry College in Milton, MA, she developed and coordinated a support program for college students with learning disabilities who are not native speakers of English.
