Teacher to Teacher: Designing Math Instruction that Works (Bos)

Overview
Following a highly succesful first year, the ALRI/Greater Boston SABES is recruiting teachers for the second year to form a cohort and commit to 10 hours of professional development in the teaching and learning of math. Those who participated last year, as well as newcomers with all levels of experience are encouraged to participate in this year's Teacher to Teacher (T2T) which are designed to help practitioners increase their competence and confidence in creating and adapting math lessons.
Details
During four sessions of 2.5 hours each, participants will increase their competence and confidence in creating and adapting math curricula and activities. As the participants engage with math approaches and material, they will each develop a unit or lesson plan and increase their ease with the MA ABE Curriculum Frameworks for Math and Numeracy. In subsequent sessions, the participants will revise and expand their units to meet the needs of their particular sudents. The first session will be held at the Adult Literacy Resource Institute/Greater Boston SABES on Tuesday, Novemeber 6, 2006. The following three sessions will be held during January, February and April of 2008 at the participants' programs.

Learning objectives
Participants will be able to: Develop at least two complete math lesson plans with activities; Identify key elements of lesson plans; Recognize properties of mathematical problems and activities; Design a math lesson plan that meets DOE guidelines; Design a math lesson plan that aligns with the Curriculum Frameworks.
