However, each session will address a different issue and can stand alone. Some sessions will take place in Boston, and some will be in the Southeast. Subject: ESOL
Description: This workshop introduces teachers and counselors working with ESOL learners at all levels to the new “Life Skills, College, and Career Readiness Guide for ESOL Learners,” developed through a collaborative effort of ACLS, SABES, ESOL practitioners, and the national Center for Adult English Language Acquisition Team. The Guide provides lists of activities in the form of life skills, academic, and career indicators related to various competencies that ESOL students need to acquire in preparing for their “next steps.” Workshop participants will explore the Guide and will learn and develop strategies for using the Guide in the classroom as well as for counseling and advising with individual students.
Subject: ABE,GED,Other Curriculum & Instruction
Description: This workshop will focus on the algebraic thinking needed by ABE/ASE students. Our students need a strong foundation in algebraic thinking and practices to keep doors to the future open, but research tells us that students' skills are often weak. You can help. No matter how long it's been since your own last "algebra encounter," no matter whether you see it as a helpful tool or a monstrous challenge, you will enjoy the camaraderie of learning in this workshop. Join with colleagues in exploring the meaning of algebra and paths to better algebra instruction that foster communication, problem solving, and reasoning--essential skills to prepare ABE/ASE students for good jobs and further education. In this workshop, we will investigate general math teaching principles, as well as algebra-specific ideas. Together we will solve algebra problems suitable for lessons. Classroom materials are provided.

Subject: Trainings for Directors
Description: Managed Enrollment is a practice that can help ABE/ESOL programs and staff to organize and implement their work more efficiently and effectively. But many practitioners are reluctant to embrace Managed Enrollment for fear that they will have half-empty classes and have to deny students the opportunity to attend class. However, Managed Enrollment might be the key to fostering ABE/ESOL program success in helping adult learners progress toward their Next Steps. Come to this special Directors Sharing Group to learn more about Managed Enrollment. We will be joined by guest presenter Christine Tibor of Framingham Adult ESL Plus, who will share how she makes Managed Enrollment work in her program- and explore how you can make it work in yours. She will share how intake procedures, volunteer assistance, attendance policies, and waitlist management all can support Managed Enrollment efforts.
